CANALS by
CANALS is a personal passion project by Marcus Brown, an art director from New Zealand, and developer Aristide Benoist. The site celebrates the history of the Amsterdam canals, through visual design.
Inspired by magazine layouts, the website takes a different approach to traditional web layout and navigation. It moves sideways through a series of typographically focused pages, and features a large number of historical images - such as paintings and maps from the Rijksmuseum’s database. Showcasing four centuries of Amsterdam's inner city area.
The look and feel of the site is inspired by the iconic flag of Amsterdam, and includes a number of typefaces chosen for their historical feel or reference to the shape and flow of water.
An incredibly striking digital journey through the history of the canals of Amsterdam. Visually intriguing.
